Cavanal Hill Ultra Short Tax-Free Income Fund Quarterly Commentary

4Q 2023

Market Overview

The short end of the municipal market saw yields on fixed rate bonds rise slightly in October before falling dramatically in November and declining further in December. Rates finished the period about 100 basis points (1%) lower than where they began, which was unexpected by most market participants given the overall trend for the year. Yields on variable rate demand notes (VRDNs) had less volatility than they had experienced for most of 2023, but still moved about 150 basis points (1.5%) in the month of December alone. Despite all the movement, the SIFMA index closed the period at 3.87%, which was only 11 basis points (0.11%) lower than the beginning of the quarter.

Positioning the Fund

Portfolio composition is subject to change

Now that the Federal Reserve has indicated that the monetary tightening cycle is over and the market is anticipating the Fed’s next move will be a rate cut, the Ultra Short Tax-Free Income Fund will look to lock in attractive yields by extending the duration in the portfolio.

Why should investors consider investing in this fund?

The Fund continues to offer an attractive tax-free yield and the investment mix of fixed rate bonds and VRDNs help maintain a relatively stable net asset value.

Investment Risks

Fixed income securities are subject to interest rate risks. The principal value of a bond falls when interest rates rise and rise when interest rates fall. During periods of rising interest rates, the value of a bond investment is at greater risk than during periods of stable or falling rates. Short term investment grade bonds offer less risk and generally a lower rate of return than longer term higher yielding bonds. Bond funds will tend to experience smaller fluctuations in value than stock funds. However, investors in any bond fund should anticipate fluctuations in price, especially for longer term issues and in environments of changing interest rates. The Fund’s income may be subject to certain state and local taxes and, depending on one’s tax status, to the federal alternative minimum tax.
